Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Cormorant Resolution (Draft)

CLARK TOWNSHIP BOARD
REGULAR MEETING
MAY 15, 2003

R E S O L U T I O N

THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS OFFERED FOR ADOPTION BY CLARK TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE Nye, supported by TRUSTEE Hansen.

WHEREAS: The Township is deeply concerned over the effect that the cormorants have had on our local wildlife.

WHEREAS: The cormorants eat up to 18 fish a day and have a relative long life. We now have a lack of fish in our lakes and streams.

WHEREAS: The Township is deeply concerned of the economy in our area due in part to the many cormorants.

WHEREAS: Our local resorts in Cedarville and Hessel used to be heavily populated with fisherman from opening day until late into the fall.

WHEREAS: These fishermen would contribute to our local economy through their purchases at our local stores and restaurants.

WHEREAS: The Township is deeply concerned of the environment change on properties due to Cormorants.

WHEREAS: Islands that these birds have chosen to habitat were once green and filled with wild life.

WHEREAS: Many Islands in the Les Cheneaux area now have dead trees due to the heavy nesting of the Cormorants.

WHEREAS: The droppings of these birds have killed off the foliage around the lakes and streams.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Clark Township Board requests that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources insist that the Federal Authorities allow action to be taken regarding regulation of the mass population of the cormorants. In order to save our lakes, fish, islands and economic resources that needs to have some intervention taken before everything that our area is established upon is destroyed.

Adopted this 15th day of May 2003.  Ayes: Farero, Hudson, Hansen, Smith and Nye. Nays: None

The undersigned Clerk of the Clark Township Board: hereby certifies that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a portion of the minutes of a regular meeting of the Clark Township Board held the 15th day of May, 2003.

Marion E. Farero
Clark Township Clerk
